Film Programme

WOMEX 19 Film Programme features 17 documentaries with stories from across the globe divided into Market & Public Screenings alongside a Film Library.

Music remains at the forefront of the 2019 film programme, representing societies, their socio-cultural traditions and politics that are usually left out of the mainstream narrative.

In bringing forth these insightful audio-visual reflections of the sonic world, we enter into a discourse: how can film evoke new musical narratives, conserve traditions and sustain memories?

The programme allows for an immersive experience for bookers, curators, label managers and publishers among other WOMEXicans to explore a variety of music, discover the musicians, projects and collaborations behind the sounds, reflect on alternative programming opportunities and connect with the filmmakers present- further strengthening the conversation between the global music and film community.

WOMEX Market Screenings are handpicked one-off screenings that push forth synergies between the film and music industry introducing music, artists and the histories behind them. Each film has one screening at either 11:00 (Small Auditorium, Tampere Hall) or at 16:00 (Maestro, Tampere Hall). These screenings are only accessible to accredited WOMEX delegates.
The WOMEX Film Programme extends into Public Screenings hosted this year by Arthouse Cinema Niagara, an indie cinema in Tampere, giving a chance to local audiences to experience a vibrant and engaging set of films. The public programme is accessible to WOMEX delegates once the expo at Tampere Hall closes at 18:00. The public screenings start at 18:30 at Niagara, which is a 15 min walk from Tampere Hall. Seating at Niagara is limited on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The WOMEX Film Library is a physical space that features an extended selection of films highlighting new projects, colloborations along with previews of unreleased films. The films in the library are independent of a scheduled screening and can be watched by accredited WOMEX delegates on one of the four available viewing stations at a time/ day convenient to them. All seven films are accessible on-demand at anytime between 10:00-18:00 from Thursday 24 October through Saturday 26 October.
