TRADITIONAL SALENTO MUSIC AND THE BRASS BAND
The brass band phenomenon seems to be a truthful legacy and -memory of older generations and a few particularly motivated devoted supporters listening other than just observing. During the last few years, it has caught the attention of curious and attentive tourists. Nevertheless, band music presents and presented a means of aggregation and enjoyment of more direct- and lively "cultured" music than that of other diffused musical phenomena, way back when radio and television did not exist.
Bands from Puglia have always represented instruments in the town's square to unite the "people", where the townsmen, who probably have never set foot in a theatre, can sing together to songs like "Traviata" or "Aida", or just to comment on the execution of the music, surrounded by the lights of the "Cassa Armonica" (the music box).
La Cassa Armonica (the music box) becomes the stage of excellence where bands from Puglia are exhibited. They have a particular round structure that allows any spectator to listen to the perfect acoustic amplification of the music from whichever point they find themselves.
GIRODIBANDA attempts to bring popular music up-to-date, ranging from band music to traditional music from Salento, interpreted into popular folk and balkan music. Cesare Dell'Anna directs this band (with musicians from Puglia) and also includes the group OPA CUPA, who have been working and experimenting with the mixture of traditional band music and the melodies and rhythms of Balkan funfare. The ensemble is accompanied by the vocals of: Enza Pagliara, Emanuele Licci and Claudio Cavallo, who represents the traditional music of Salento.
