Ethiopian jazz revival
Ethiopian jazz is a major branch of African music that comes from the bars of Addis Ababa and draws its influence from jazz and traditional Ethiopian music, azmari, Latin sounds and Anglo-American funk. Choosing to adapt this music in a contemporary and more urban style, Arat Kilo draws inspiration from rock music and the hypnotic sounds of dub.
Their show alternates compositions and standard Ethiopian arrangements (a beautiful meeting was held at RFI's studio with Mulatu Astatke, the father of Ethiopian jazz).
L'Ethio-jazz est un courant majeur de la musique africaine. Il est ne dans les bars d'Addis-Abeba sous les influences du jazz et de la musique traditionnelle ethiopienne dite azmari, de la musique latine et de la funk anglo-americaine.
Prenant le parti de relire cette musique d'une maniere contemporaine et plus urbaine, Arat Kilo s'inspire de la puissance du rock et des sons hypnotiques du dub.
Leur spectacle alterne compositions et arrangements de standards ethiopiens (une belle rencontre a eu lieu au studio de RFI avec Mulatu Astatke, le pere de l'Ethio-jazz).
