Rosa Negra

The concert by Rosa Negra is a new departure in the field of Portuguese music. In fact, although it is not unusual to hear fado accompanied by an orchestra, it is rare to find it performed by a group who play piano, cello, violin, Arabic percussion instruments and trumpet.

The female vocalist, Carmo, has the typical voice of a fado singer, but she interprets the songs in an original way. The presence of veils, sometimes concealing, sometimes revealing her movements linked to the soulful tones create for us moments of sheer delight during her rendition of ‘BARCO NEGRO’. Although our initial reaction to her oriental interpretation of ‘Vou dar de beber à dor’ may be one of surprise, this soon gives way to whole-hearted appreciation.

‘FADO LADINO’ her debut album, which came out on the British ARC label in March 2007, is surprisingly innovative within the new fado, both its past and its future.
In warm tones and deep shades the plaintive laments of its music, interwoven with tribal movements and rhythms of the desert, accompany a deep and adventurous fado voice which challenges fate in an intricate web of arrangements inspired by Iberian, Mediterranean and Moorish influences with oriental overtones.
‘FADO LADINO’ , both astute and full of life, is of gypsy, Moorish and Latin origin.

During the concert there is a succession of fados and songs going back in time to the Portuguese of the Seven Voyages,
which transport us to an imaginary palace where troubadors presented to the Court music which they had brought from the four corners of the Earth.
To enhance this image, at certain points in the show a specially invited guest dancer gracefully interprets this fantasy.
