“This band thinks global and acts local” by Fusion.net, 2014, USA

"... Curupira opened one of the most memorable chapters of modern Colombian music in the year 2000 when they came out with 'Palante Patra." Terra Entretenimiento, 2013, Colombia

“With a career spanning a decade and a half of innovative work by some of the most intensely creative musicians in the scene in Bogotá, Colombia, Curupira is most definitely one of the representatives of the amazing cultural cross-fertilization happening in that country in recent years. The group’s eclectic, unclassifiable sound successfully embraces the deepest roots of Colombian folklore while bringing to the mix a healthy dose of urban expressions like funk, rock and rap, as well as jazz and classical hindustani music.” by Freddy Castiblanco, La Terraza, NY, June 2014, USA

Curupira recorded with the Father of Ethio-Jazz, Mulatu Astatke in Bogota. They have also recorded in New York in June, 2014 with Multi Grammy Producer and Engineer, Marc Urselli, a wonderful album "La Gaita Fantastica" that will be out in a few months. Some of the guests from New York in this recording are: Shanir Blumenkranz (Oud/Gimbri), Ari Hoenig (Drums), Pherraon Aklaff (Drums), Lucía Pulido (Singer), Sofía Rey (Singer) among others

Juan Sebastian Monsalve, musical director, says "We try to make progressive music based on tradition, and we attempt to awaken consciousness, and promote communion and harmony with nature." He also notes "Our music holds a strong influence from the old musical traditions of the different regions of Colombia. These traditions are our source of learning; they are our masters in interpreting the traditional instruments. One of our roles is to reassess and to draw attention to these masters who are our principal influence."

All the Curupira's band members play multiple instruments for the group. Curupira's music is based on the folkloric tradition of the Pacific and Atlantic coasts, and on the eastern plains of Colombia (Llanos Orientales) with rhythms like those of the gaita, the chalupa, fandango, puya, champeta, currulao, and the joropo. They integrate these rhythms with contemporary urban genres like jazz, rap, rock, funk, and classical Hindustani music.
