Celebrating the Autumn Equinox that inspired their name, Welsh band Jamie Smith’s Mabon move things on a pace for their fifth album, adding songs to a previously instrumental repertoire. Among the guests, Calum Stewart joins them on wooden flute, as does Will Lang (bodhran) and Tomas Callister (fiddles, banjo), for the opening set of driving tunes that kicks off the album. The last of the Tunnag’s Tunes nails the JSM sound with Jamie’s accordion, Oli and Tom’s fiddles and Iolo’s drums propulsing as one for the rousing Feed The Worm. The Gordano Ranter proves a highlight as accordion, fiddle, bouzouki, bass and drums fly through a rich and daring tonal palette.
Among the songs, the wistful Summer’s Lament featuring Dylan Fowler on lap steel makes you want to join in, as do the harmonies of the celebratory Yes We Sing Now, but it’s the soulful Welsh song Caru Pum Merch that stands out here – a song of love for one woman throughout her life. Reflective fiddle morphs into accordion drone accompanying Jamie’s stark vocals, joined by Iolo’s crisp, cyclical percussion as the layers start to build. Oli’s fiddle sings over the top while the sound swells then ebbs away once more in compulsive fashion – gorgeous. JSM impress once more.
