Taken from 'U-Zine': A very promising new band - and live they're even better! Fred Verhaeghe (ex-Mambo Chillum) & Frits Standaert (ex-Fonda) are the core members of Durango, and live they're augmented by Simon Pleysier (Wawadadakwa, Belgian Afrobeat Association) on guitar and Rohal De Ridder (el Fish) on drums. On stage, they're a tight little unit that calls to mind the 'spot-era' Captain Beefheart & his Magic Band, Little Feat or even Canned Heat. (Somehow, they're what Mallard should've sounded like.) On record, those Beefheart influences remain, but the band sounds moodier, equally calling to mind Tom Waits, Tony Joe White or even Chris Whitley. But Durango's swampy sound doesn't sound like epigonism at all: one immediately senses that these cats are the genuine product - and that's not something I'm easily inclined to say. On the cd (which also features Bruno de Bruxelles, Geoffrey Burton and Thomas De Prins), there's also a couple of more soulful tracks, e.g. "Worship your woman" or the pretty funky "In the gutter". Only "September" is a bit lesser, but even so this is an impressive debut. (pv)
