Enzo Avitabile was born in Naples in 1955,
and starts his studies on the saxophone at
the age of seven, and at an early age starts
playing in various bands in American clubs
in Naples. Afterwards he attends
the Conservatory of S. Pietro a Maiella
where he earns his diploma in flute, and
collaborates with the greatest Italian artists;
in 1982 his first record making achievement
is released. It will be followed by other nine
records edited by EMI and two by CNI that
make him famous and acclaimed with
thepublic at large. During these 20 years he
has worked with the biggest names on the
International music scene James
BrownRichie HavensAfrica
BamabaataaTina Turner, Randy
CrawfordMory Kante etc.
In 2001 he starts working on a completely
new musical project ENZO AVITABILE &
BOTTARI)
where he merges his sound with the
tradition of the Bottari origins go back to the
early 14 century),the instruments involved
are kegs, tubs, and sicklesas percussions,
that stress ancient processionalrhythms.
So the story goes that everything started
with the farmers who in their attempt to
chase away evil spirits from the dark corners
of their cellars would frantically beat kegs,
tubs and sickles and other
tools used daily in the work fields. This ritual
was carried on also out in the open to
propitiate a good
harvest, initially pagan traditions flowing into
the religious festival of S. Antonio Abate
(27-January),
where wagons were built in the shape of
boats and decorated with palm leaves (to
evoke the Saint’s sailing of the sea
separating Italy from Egypt).
In ancient times they were pulled by oxen,
where a group of young men are
placed(PattugliaPatrolwho with sticks and
bats, rhythmically strike kegs and tubs, while
others strike sickles with metal rods.
The performance of every pattuglia is
directed by a CapopattugliaSpecial rhythmic
