For the past few years, US based Nigerian singer FLOXY BEE, the Yeye Asa (Mother of Culture), has spent much of her time in Nigeria in the Yoruba cultural heartland of Osun State. Not surprisingly, her signature Hikosso Music has evolved into what can be best described as a neo-traditional Yoruba genre.
Neo-traditional Yoruba music seeks to revive the cultural heritage of Africa by using the traditional and post-traditional pre-hiphop contemporary African genres and seeks to rearticulate its proverbs, incantations, invocations and rhythms to address modern themes such as the changing role of women and the global break down of societies. The Yeye Asa, Floxy Bee uses Yoruba proverbs and puns to project her message and culture into the 21st century.
