  • Miri Behrang

Behrang Miri, a multitalented Swedish artist with roots in Iran. With a mindblowing eclectic sound and a unique approach to hip hop music he delivers rhymes in a way you don't see much of these days. He always finds new directions in his artistry and he is part of the hip hop scene as much as the globally growing world music scene. Since his latest album "The book of our life", several singles and tours he has created a musical spot on his own in the everchanging musical landscape. All this has finally crystalised into his forthcoming album "Dance To The Revolution" which doesn't sound like anything you've previously heard with him. Behrang Miri has on "Dance To The Revolution" put the Swedish language on the shelf to rocket his music to a new level in English. The sound on his new album is a mix of electronic clubfantasies, intriguing storytelling and melodies from the Middle East, South America and North Africa in a futuristic fusion. Behrang Miri's music is a perfect blend where east meets west and his middle eastern origin influences his music which gives it its original touch. Behrang is not just a rapper with lyrical skills. He uses his skill to say something. He believes in fighting against injustice and is not afraid to take a stand with his songs. His successes with the songs "Free Iran" and "Ramallah" shows that it pays off to rap as you learn. People say that action speaks louder than words; with Behrang his action speaks as loud as his words. A live performance with Behrang is an enchanting experience of its own. With his live band consisting of oud, violin, darbouka, congas and guitar he delivers nothing like your typical hip hop artist. Throw in a DJ in the mix and you will not be disappointed whether you're into hip hop,rap or whatever. Behrang has a unique quality to rock every crowd no matter the current circumstances, a performance that doesn't leave any one untouched. Behrang Miri has been touring all around Sweden, Scandinavia, Brazil, Lebanon, South Africa, Kenya, Turkey, England and Palestine. Besides performing and touring on his own he has been support act to artists like Blackstreet, Outlandish and Omarion and he has performed with world-famous Iranian rappers like Hichkas and Shahin Najafi. He has also collaborated with Palestine's biggest rap group Dam, Beatnuts and Sweden's biggest world music artist Ale Moeller. The Palestine Tour was a way to draw attention to the compilation "Hip Hop 4 Gaza". It was documented by a crew from Sweden that was following Behrang during his time in Palestine. The result became a successful documentary called "Hip Hop 4 Gaza". The documentary premiered in spring '11 at the international film festival in Gothenburg and is planned to be broadcasted on Swedish National Television in autumn '11. As a program leader, debater, writer, radio host, speaker amongst other things he's become known as a polymath without boundaries. Whether it's about debating at a morning TV- show, hosting a radioshow or writing as a columnist in the paper, nothing is too big a task for Behrang Miri. He is in Sweden considered to be one of the biggest opinion leaders and artist when it comes to questioning integration issues etc.
A few examples are worth mentioning. Behrang Miri was interviewed by the living legend Mats Nileskaer that has been the host for Swedish National Radio's show P3 Soul since 1978. The interview became a discussion about todays hip-hop and the part it has taken in the democracy movement among the youth in the middle east. He has also been interviewed and portrayed by The New York Times, Al-Jazeera International and Iranian Voice of America. The weekly music show Kook on Persian BBC viewed by millions of Iranians around the world produced an hour long show about Behrang. For his many achievements Behrang has won many awards such as "Joyspreader of the Year" in 2008. This year alone he has received two scholarships, from Alma he was rewarded for his hard work in the youth movement RGRA which he established. RGRA is a movement that works with youths in lower class areas in Malmoe with a lot of immigrants and refugees. In different ways RGRA uses music like hip hop, dancing and producing as pedagogic tools to help youths to grow. From the trust "Goera Gott" (eng: doing good) he was rewarded for his social activism and for building bridges between different cultures and generations. At the age of 27 Behrang Miri has written his own blueprint of success already establishing himself as an artist, lecturer, host, actor, writer and coordinator for the organization RGRA and much more. His passion and engagement for social change is something that is essential in his music. Take the song "Free Iran" as an example. Both the video and song has spread around the globe like a wild fire. The song is about the situation by which the youth and others live in Iran. The song "Ramallah" is inspired by a traditional folksong from Palestine. On the track Behrang Miri raps about life and the situation the people are living in on an everyday basis in occupied Palestine.
