This pioneering guitarist’s career began in high school when he received lessons from two professors at the Rotterdam Conservatory. His studies continued at the Fontys Conservatory in Tilburg, the institute at which he now teaches music history, analysis, philosophy and performance studies. He holds three Masters degrees: one in Music Theory, the second in Musicology and the third in Guitar.

Since his school days he has ploughed a lone furrow, like the iconoclast he is, following his instincts as a solo guitarist and bringing his challenging intellect to bear on everything we understand as accepted genre or musical style. He also plays frequently with leading Dutch and international ensembles.

With percussionist and composer Arnold Marinissen he is artistic leader of F.C. Jongbloed and he is a regular guest with Lunatree, Klang, and Andre de Ridder’s international ensemble StarGaze (with whom he contributed music for Alejandro Gonzáles Iñárritu’s film The Revenant). He was won many awards, and performs internationally at major halls and with ensembles like Britten Sinfonia, Denmark’s Underholdungsorkester as well as the New York Philharmonic.

Almost all his instruments are self-made, and include an 8 string guitar developed in collaboration with Steve Reich for his marathon performance of the composer’s works.
