Cocanha

Cocanha (France)

Cocanha by Amic Bedel

Occitan polyphonic vocal singing and dance rhythms resonantly beaten out on stringed tambourines form the inspirational base for Cocanha's celebration of identity, community, family and everyday beauty, as effectively portrayed in their series of artfully crafted videos. Cocanha was founded in Toulouse in 2014 on the initiative of Caroline Dufau and Lila Fraysse, both members of the Dètz collective, an Occitan audiovisual laboratory, and the project has grown, with the participation of the Pagans label, through four albums and collaborations with other artists and collectives dedicated to furthering Occitan culture. Their 2020 album, Puput, saw them teamed with producer Raül Refree to 'set the archives in motion', bringing their repertoire of traditional Pyrenean, Gascon and Languedoc songs to contemporary life, adapting and updating lyrics while expanding the sounds of the stringed tambourines for dance-floor compatibility.
