In 2017, composer Molly Joyce released her debut EP ‘Lean Back and Release.’ While that may have been Joyce’s proper public introduction she had written prolifically before: for orchestras, bands and chamber groups, in collaboration with visual artists and dancers. Joyce is an inveterate performer fond of a Magnus toy organ she found on eBay, and she DJs under the moniker DJ MJ.
That last bit is important. Joyce’s music boasts inventive melodies and supremely satisfying structure. But she also brings the beats. Sometimes they creep in by way of repeated notes or rhythms, nice and subtle. Other times they’re more explicit, as in her work ‘Form and Deform’ – it’s a heady piece of music that’s also a club banger.
Joyce’s music lives comfortably on the dancefloor and in the exalted art music world, and critics have called it “vibrant” and “impassioned.” It’s no wonder Joyce is in high demand for concerts and commissions around the world.
