Music Documentaries and Reaching New Audiences

Film Talk

Chaired by Lucia Udvardyová (Slovakia), Piranha Arts; with Thomas Bouet (France), Qwest TV; Julien Kourbatoff (France), PAM/IDOL; Felipe Maqui (Spain/Argentina), La Ideal

Music documentaries are not only produced by traditional film production companies, but increasingly, also by online music magazines, radio stations, and even file-sharing platforms. With the ubiquity of video content on social media platforms, be it TikTok or Instagram Reels, it is harder and harder to navigate and reach new audiences and, vice versa, for the audiences to find meaningful content. How are producers of these music documentary series faring in today's oversaturated media world? What tools do they use to reach new audiences?

This film talk brings together panellists from around the globe, whose films are screening at WOMEX this year: Julien Kourbatoff from Pan African Music (PAM), a music platform focusing on documenting new talent from the African continent; Felipe Maqui, the director of Salimos, a documentary series that portrays the independent music scenes of Latin America; as well as as well as Thomas Bouet from Qwest TV, Quincy Jones’ video streaming network celebrating Black & global music.
