SÜLEYMAN ERGUNER

Born in Istanbul in 1957, Süleyman Erguner is the the son of Neyzen Ulvi Erguner and the grandson of the ney-performer and composer Süleyman Erguner. He started learning the ney and music from his father at the age of 5, a learning journey that continued until his father’s death in 1974. In 1973, at the age of 16, he performed at the Mevlevi Sema ceremony held at the Istanbul Sports and Exhibition Centre, followed by his performing at the Mevlana Commemoration ceremonies in the city of Konya in 1974. In 1975 he was appointed to the State Radio in Istanbul as a ney performer and gave his first international concert in Poland. He also worked for the Turkish Music Ensemble of the Istanbul Municipality in the period of 1976-85. Suleyman Erguner also performed with American jazz musician Butch Morris' group in New York.

Süleyman Erguner graduated from the Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences at Marmara University in Istanbul in 1981. In 1979 he joined the Turkish Music Conservatory at the Istanbul Technical University as an instructor for ney performance, Turkish music theory and musicology. He completed his Master’s degree at Marmara University in 1991 in the areas of the history and theory of Turkish music. He holds a Doctorate from the same university which he earned in 1997. After serving as a ney artist at the Istanbul Radio and as a conductor of the Classical Turkish Music and Turkish Religious Music Choirs, he became the Chairman of the Music Department at the State Radio.
Since 1975 he has performed in numerous concerts like Turkey, France, Germany, United Kingdom, South Korea, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, United States, Tunusia, Morocco, Jordan and Egypt.

Abroad and participated in many national and international symposiums on music and education. In 1987 he performed at the Mevlana Ceremony in Konya as a head ney-player. In 1997 he was awarded the title of the ‘Artist of the Year’ by the Turkish Writers’ Association. In 2003 he served as the Art Director of the International Ney Festival organized in Istanbul under the sponsorship of the European Union. In 2007, which was acknowledged by Unesco as the ‘Year of Mevlana’, he staged the same concert with the participation of ‘30’ ney artists in Istanbul, the first of its kind in ney history. He gave various lectures on the ney and music theory in Cairo, Tunisia and Jerusalem.
He has produced numerous albums including Nefes, Mevlevi Töreni, Şah Ney, Tende Canim, Girift. He is also the author of the first published Ney Method book. In addition to his album, book publishing and concert projects, he continues to teach at the the Turkish Music Conservatory at the Istanbul Technical University as Professor Of Musicology as well as at his Ney Workshop in Istanbul.
