As the first ensemble ever in Europe, tabadoul orchestra presents the adventurous compositions of Abdel Wahab in a feature-length concert
and on CD.
Mohamed Abdel Wahab, who died in 1991, was one of the most significant and innovative composers of the Arabian world. He is regarded as the inventor of the Arabian film-musical and also introduced Western instruments like electric guitars, -pianos and -organs to the Arabian music, thus developing a completely new style. Furthermore, the use of Latin-American dance rhythms like Beguine, Rumba or ChaCha in the context of the traditional Egyptian string orchestra, his innovative way of orchestration and composition techniques as well as a life´s work of more than 1.000 compositions lifts Mohamed Abdel Wahab clearly out of the ranks of usual Egyptian musicians. He had, like no other, the ability, to amalgamate the old Arabic musical tradition with the new, the Oriental with the Western, what made him popular far beyond his own generation. Mohamed Abdel Wahab is considered, after Sayed Darwish, as the crucial pioneer and innovator of Arabic art music. From a contemporary perspective he could even be described as an early Frank Zappa of Arabian music ...
Wahabs extremely eccentrical mixture of bellydance and Bavaria, of Egyptian folklore and thriller-soundtrack started to enthuse Raimund Kroboth and his fellow musicians already since long ago. But teaming up with the young, charismatic singer Dina Gouda, who grew up in Cairo, finally convinced everybody to launch this exciting new project. With further members like the Chech wunderkind Jura Wajda, whose virtuoso mastery of the Cymbalon (...a hungarian gipsy dulcimer) reveals stunning parallels to Wahab´s use of the Qanun (...the egyptian zither), but also with taraf-violinist Nina Leonards and the accordionist Martin Kübert, the tabadoul orchestra once more expands its sound spectrum and conveys the music of Abdel Wahab, who still is widely unknown in europe, with delight and fascination to the 21st century.
Founded in summer 2010 by members of the famous Cologne worldmusic-collective Schäl Sick Brassband together with guests and the charismatic Egyptian singer Dina Gouda , the tabadoul orchestra presents its first live-program and also their first CD: “world wide wahab”. This program is dedicated to the most important composer of the Arabian world in the 20th century: Mohammed Abdel Wahab from Egypt.

Das "tabadoul orchestra" feat. Dina Gouda präsentiert Musik von Mohammed Abdel Wahab - den man getrost als Frank Zappa Ägyptens bezeichnen kann. In Deutschland noch weitgehend unbekannt holt das "tabadoul orchestra" (als erstes europäisches Ensemble überhaupt) diesen Komponisten mit einem virtuosen Sound, mit Lust und Faszination ins 21. Jahrhundert.
Das im Sommer 2010 von renommierten und band-erfahrenen Musikern aus Köln, Polen, der Türkei und Tschechien zusammen mit der charismatischen ägyptischen Sängerin Dina Gouda gegründete "tabadoul orchestra" widmet ihr Programm dem bedeutendsten und innovativsten Komponisten der arabischen Welt im 20. Jahrhundert: dem Ägypter Mohammed Abdel Wahab. Wahab - 1991 verstorben - gilt als Erfinder des arabischen Filmmusicals und führte westliche Instrumente wie E-Gitarren, E-Piano und elektrische Orgeln in die arabische Musik ein und entwickelte dadurch einen gänzlich neuen Stil.
Auch die Verwendung von lateinamerikanischen Tanzrhythmen wie Beguine, Rumba oder ChaCha im Kontext eines traditionellen ägyptischen Streichorchesters, seine innovative Orchestrierung und Kompositionstechnik hebt Mohamed Abdel Wahab aus der Reihe der ägyptischen Musiker deutlich heraus. Dazu kommt ein Lebenswerk von schätzungsweise 1.000 Kompositionen. Wahab war wie kein anderer in der Lage, alte arabische Musiktraditionen mit neuen Einflüssen kompositorisch zu verschmelzen und orientalische wie westliche Musikkultur zu integrieren. Das machte ihn in seinem Kulturkreis zu einem generationsübergreifend beliebten Komponisten. Nach Sayed Darwish gilt er als der Pionier und innovative Neuerer der arabischen Kunstmusik. Man könnte ihn aus der heutigen Perspektive sogar als einen frühen Frank Zappa der arabischen Musik bezeichnen ...
Wahabs auf den ersten Blick abenteuerlich anmutende Mischung aus Bauchtanz und Bayern, Folklore und Krimi-Soundtrack beschäftigte und begeisterte "Schal Sick Brass Band" Mastermind Raimund Kroboth seit Langem. Der Kontakt zu der jungen, charismatischen Sängerin Dina Gouda, die in Kairo aufgewachsen ist, war der finale Auslöser, das Projekt endgültig in Angriff zu nehmen - mit einem 11-köpfigem Ensemble aus virtuosen Musikern und mit einem fundamental neuem Konzept.
Bereits kurz nach der Gründung legt das "tabadoul orchestra" einen fulminanten Start auf die Bühnen der Welt hin : die Premiere fand vor völlig verzücktem und mitsingendem Publikum beim internationalen Jazzfestival Ankara statt, es folgten Auftritte in St. Petersburg (Goethe-Institut), beim WDR3 jazz.cologne-Festival, als Top-Act bei der Schlussfeier des CREOLE-Weltmusikwettbewerbes in Dortmund, eine Fernsehaufzeichnung (ZDF) als Begleitband der Verleihung des Deutschen Theaterpreises "DER FAUST" im Aalto-Theater in Essen. Am 31. 10. ein Live-Aufzeichnung des WDR im Stadtgarten Köln. Für 2011 gibt es bereits eine Einladung zum Weltmusikfestival in Alexandria und nach Kairo.
