BSM are renowned for their unique blend of Brazilian beats, hiphop and pacific soul - a fusion borne out of the blend of cultures in NZ, and the vision of the founders of the band James Hughes and Richie Setford.

Hughes had played previously in a number of local bands, forging paths in NZ's burgeoning reggae/soul scene - one that has been made famous by the likes of Fat Freddy's - and then with his love for Brazilian and latin rhythms, formed BSM and effectively introduced the 2 styles together.

The result was a natural fit, with the percussive based grooves (samba-reggae, baion, samba, cumbia) sitting comfortably alongside the laid-back NZ soul and hiphop influences.

Add in some afrobeat for good measure, some straight-ahead guitar riffs, and a killer horn section - and the rest is history.
