Canteca de Macao: the street on the stage

With a little bit of more than 3 years of life behind them, the members of Canteca de Macao have moved from playing at Madrid's streets to being part of some of the most important music festivals of the spanish and foreign mediums. The nine integrants of this half-cast band have found the way to express their present multiculturality with their own musical style; a fusion of ska, reggae and rumba rythms combine with a frenetic live show which has allowed a connection with the public in each country they have visited.
Canteca de Macao has been able to move from small venues in which they started playing for passion, without ever placing a cd on the shelfs of big comercial shops. The only publicity they've had until this moment is the news of their multiple concerts around Europe, Latin America or the near East, bouncing from ear to ear with the word of mouth of the persons that have assisted their potent live shows.
The band took a risk at the right moment and bet on the Canteca project with their first album "Cachai?". Recorded at Hispana Studios in Madrid, their 13 ecstatic and compromised songs which sold the only 4000 copies recorded of this first album, even though the theaters were they have played have been their only selling points.
The debut tour of "Cachai?" took the band on a tour of more than 100 concerts all over the spanish geography; a experience which led them to stages in all Spain and other parts of Europe. In Germany they could even read a "sold out" sign on the door of the Gloria Theater were more than one thousand persons atended to the music, dancing, and juggling of Canteca de Macao.
The good results of that first experiment encouraged the band to set a new challenge: a second album "Camino de la vida entera",mixed at Jose Luis Garrido's Studios, available now at stores. But this time with the big multinational (Dro East West/Warner Music Spain) supporting them on their direct entry to the market.
Canteca de Macao has been able to mantain their fundamental principles in the different negotiations with their label, after a year of pull and tug the company has accepted to leave intact the right of free download of the bands music. In virtue of this any person of the world with internet access can download both albums of the band, refering to the most mestizo spanish musical genre, in their web page. The band itself recognizes the merit of the label for its compromise to free circulation of art which supposes in the end" that you are asking a company which is dedicated to sell cds to give out your bands cd's on a web page" they Admit. A pioneer iniciative in the music world that few bands have done until now and with the hope of the members of Canteca de Macao to reach as much exposure as possible
