The Chopi people's 'mbila', the singular for 'timbila', is a unique instrument in the music of the Bantus of the Southern African continent, ancestral to the later Western variants, the xylophone and marimba. In the spring of 2000 Eero Koivistoinen was in Mozambique to record timbila music when the country was devastated by floods and these plans had to be postponed. Instead, he and his colleagues produced the benefit CD, Mozambique Relief (Naxos World 76019-2). Later that same year he returned to Mozambique and was finally able to produce two CDs of timbila music for the Naxos World label, the first with the Venacio Mbande Orchestra (76016-2) and the second this recording of the music of Eduardo Durao.
