Cumbia Rebelde! It’s not only the cumbia that refuses to be cumbia, it’s the Latin Balkanica that defies the attempt to categorise it. Puerto Candelaria is a real imaginary place from where Columbia’s most innovative independent underground band of the same name set forth on voyages of assimilation and inspiration, led by the inexhaustible Sargento Remolacha, a.k.a. director and keyboardist Juan Valencia.
Over 16 years, Puerto Candelaria have evolved from their beginnings in Columbian jazz to the all-fizzing all-styles all-stars of today, casting acidic asides and humorous political commentary on Columbian life while mashing up the genres from porro to ska to vallenato and beyond, winning them fulsome fans at home and carrying them to more than 65 cities around the world to date.
