This project was launched in 2002 with the idea of combining jazz music and tango: jazz "standards", songs from the classical tango repetoire and new original compositions with the feeling and groove of this new tango/jazz fusion. The difference between the Federico Lechner Tango&Jazz Trio and most other tango/jazz fusion projects is that instead of the usual busy tango arrangements, the trio bases its music on brief (but highly efficient) arrangements and reharmonisations, and leaves musicians with lots of space for improvisation and communication, as in the best jazz piano trios.

The trio has a long history of live gigs at festivals and in clubs and theatres throughout Spain, Argentina, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. In March 2009 the trio played four concerts in New York. The group was also the principal artist on two national televison programmes in Spain: "Fusion Sonora" on Telecinco and "Noites de Jazz" on TVG.

The trio has also invited various special guests as soloists to join occasional quartets, such as the New York saxofonist Marc Mommaas, the Spanish harmonica player Antonio Serrano, and the Argentinian harmonica player Franco Luciani.

The trio has released two albums: "Estela" (Bost 2006) and "Beboponga" (2008).
