Ros Rigby trained at the Royal Ballet School followed by an MA Hons in English at the University of Edinburgh and a one-year Post Graduate Diploma in Arts Administration.
Following community arts roles in North Devon and Co Durham, from the early 1980s she created new programmes of cultural development for Gateshead Council as the first Arts Development Officer in the North of England.
Ros became a founding Co-Director of Folkworks in 1988. Their trailblazing work saw the organisation develop into the UK’s foremost producer, presenter and educator in folk music. She was awarded the OBE for this work in 1999. Folkworks, with Northern Sinfonia, was a founding partner of the venue Sage Gateshead, and in 2001 Ros was appointed Performance Programme Director. Since the venue’s opening she established a number of successful festivals and major events including hosting WOMEX in 2005 and the Gateshead International Jazz Festival. She chose to step down from her full-time role in July 2016 but continues as Festival Producer for the Gateshead International Jazz Festival.
Ros joined the Board of Europe Jazz Network in 2011, was elected as President in 2014 and re-elected for a second term in 2016.
