The music of sound: For the Greek, music was a supreme art, aimed at harmonizing body and soul. It had the power of healing by producing a purification of the body, and also of influencing the soul by improving the character. The view is based on the Pythagorean assumption, accepted by Plato, of the existence of a link between the harmony ruling the movements of the universe and the harmony ordering the human soul. The motions of the cosmos were believed to occur according to the same mathematical ratios which produced the musical intervals.
The possibility of the drum instruments to produce harmonic sounds (tones, intervals, chords) through their use of rhythm, allows us to experience the audio-musical phenomenon in its primordial form, long before it comes under any specific idiom or doctrine, thus retaining its initiatory and revealing power. In conjunction with the ancient Greek one-stringed instrument –Canon ( Greek ÊÁÍÙÍ [canôn] for rule or law)- which has been the medium par excellence of musical representation since the era of Greek philosopher Pythagoras, aided by the decisive role of modern technology, we are offered the chance to filter into the heart of sound, thus discovering an underlying order of the utmost singularity.
