Arild Andersen has been one of the leading bass players in Europe for more than 30 years, starting as a member of Jan Garbarek Quartet (67-73) together with Terje Rypdal and Jon Christensen. At that time Arild also worked with Karin Krog, and with people like Phil Woods, Dexter Gordon, Hamton Hawes, Johnny Griffin, Sonny Rollins, Chick Corea, Don Cherry and George Russel. In the early 70's Arild was a frequent guest in New York, where he worked with Stan Getz Quartet, Sam Rivers Trio, Sheila Jordan, Steve Kuhn and Paul Bley.

In 1974 his first private band was formed, with which he regularly toured Scandinavia and Europe and made 3 releases on ECM. At this time he also worked with singer Radka Toneff. Later cooperatives include Kenny Wheeler, Paul Motian, Steve Dobrogosz, Alphonse Mouzon, Bill Frisell, John Taylor and John Abercrombie - and then came Masqualero, a band that was in the forefront of European Jazz for 10 years, toured all over and made 4 albums, whereof 3 won the Norwegian Grammy Award. Arild later on had a trio with Ralph Towner and Nana Vasconcelos, and at the same time (late 80/early 90) he started investigating the possibilities of combining traditional Norwegian folk music with improvised music - to a large extent in companionship with singer Kirsten Braaten Berg, a co-work that is still active.

The later years Arild has enjoyed a very fruitful musical fellowship with German trumpeter Markus Stockhausen, Frensh percussionist Patrice Heral, British drummer John Marshall, the Greek piano player Vassilis Tsabroupolos, and the Danish piano player Carsten Dahl.

Arild's latest project is called Electra, and consists of music that Arild wrote for the theatre piece Electra by Sophocles, presented in Athens in 2002. This project includes, in addition to Arild, Arve Henriksen (trp), Eivind Aarset (git), Paolo Vinaccia (perc), Patrice Heral (perc) and Greek singer Savina Yannatou. A recording will be released at ECM early in 2005, and extended touring is under preparation.
