Considered the highest representative of what is called musica criolla peruana, Chabuca Granda was a lot more. Chabuca is probably the most important poet and composer of Peruvian popular music in the twentieth century. She built a whole new vision—often not well understood—of Peruvian popular music by masterfully bringing together the incredible aesthetics of centuries-old Peruvian-black music and the substantial ideas that were intrinsic to Latin American social processes of that century. A milestone in Chabuca’s creative process is her encounter with Félix Casaverde by the early seventies. TarimbaNegra (1978, Madrid) shows the astonishing innovative nature of this collaboration.

Three decades later, after a long and much acclaimed international career in different scenes of the world, maestro Félix Casaverde saw in Luz Katharine the rare ability to interpret Granda’s most beautiful, intricate and less known poems and songs. Interestingly, the very same emotional and rich poems that Casaverde had most times suggested many artists not to interpret. With maestro Felix’s incredible guitar, maestro Juan Medrano Cotito’s excellent “cajon” and drums (Susana Baca and Novalima’s percusionnist) and Luz Katharine’s emotional atmosphere, this album will take you to a peculiar trip that is old and current, traditional and innovative, intimate and societal at the same time.

Finally this album also features some songs of maestro Casaverde and Luz Katharine’s latest common purpose: to give a Peruvian personality to some of the most beautiful world compositions. This album, last maestro Felix Casaverde’s project before his passing away, brings compositions from Brazil, Algeria, France and the West Indies. Enjoy.
