His record company says: “Norwegian composer and tuba player, Daniel Herskedal, defies all conventions and preconceptions of what is possible as a soloist on the tuba. He is adept with a master's voice in creating vast palettes of colours and exquisite tone in his music”; and we think this is a fair description of his tonal explorations of an instrument arguably unused to being so utilised. Herskedal conjures up warm layered harmonies of cinematic breadth, using his breath to rhythmically enhance the undulating pulse of the big picture and, when needing a few higher frequencies in the mix, he reaches for his bass trumpet from which he can coax keening soprano tones. Daniel Herskedal is a conservatory graduate pursuing his own path, cutting a singular stylistic swathe through the classical, folk and jazz worlds.
