The haunting melodies that reach far back into the poetic soul of Anatolian expression are the inspirational springboard for Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek (pronounced 'shimshek'), from which they dive into a pool of references ranging from the twangy psychedelia of Turkish pop of the 60s and 70s, hypnotic electro-grooves, slippery funk and cosmic jazz. Their trip began in 2016 when the New Hamburg festival invited singer and bağlama player Derya Yildrim to work with the French/English eclecticists L'Orchestre du Montplaisant. Electronic organ manipulator, Graham Mushnik and guitarist/bassist Antonin Voyant continued the collaboration with the addition of drummer Greta Eacott. Extensive European gigging and the 2019 debut album Kar Yağar followed. During the Covidian impasse they kept busy recording the follow-ups, Dost 1 and Dost 2. Now back on the road and heading farther out.
