Born in Haifa to a musical family – his mother is the esteemed singer Amal Murkus – he grew up listening to a wide range of music, studying cello before turning to the kanun. As a teenager he toured internationally as part of his mother's ensemble and eventually became her musical arranger. Aged 17 he moved to Boston, winning a full scholarship from Berklee College of Music, leading to multiple collaborations with a diverse roster of artists from Simon Shaheen to Raghu Dixit to Roger Waters and more, as well as performing all over the United States, Europe & the Middle East. He moved to New York City in 2019, where he formed his quartet project, in which he brings his deep understanding of the maqam traditions into conversations with different vocabularies, structures and forms.
