Boosting national music export is becoming a somewhat well-oiled subsidization industry with ever more countries opening their own national office. And it really works! Some of the more experienced institutions have good track record of making a difference for their national music exports. MEOs take an ecosystem view and coordinate resources, competence and industry needs. The downside? With public funding pouring in the business, are we in danger of rigging the game? Boosting competitiveness can turn into market distortion and backfire on itself. It is most challenging in the contemporary/classical music: With various permanent subsidization models built into crucial institutions, what does market competitiveness even mean? Are we trying to fix something that works just because we have a new set tools at hand?
