Bauls are the spiritual practitioners of Bengal who express their sacred thoughts through music. Rina Das Baul comes from a well-known Baul family from Santiniketan, West Bengal.
She assimilated the music from her grandfather from an early age, singing and forming an affinity with the ektara, a single-stringed musical instrument capable of a wide range of expression. Although she had to struggle for recognition within a patriarchal society, she transcended the obstacles and is now recognised as one of the leading exponents of the great Baul traditions. Knowing yourself is the essence of Baul music, which reflects the joy, love and longing for the mystic union with the divine. Denouncing the material world they urge people to rise above the divides of caste, creed and religion to celebrate peace, love and togetherness.
