There are many guitarists in Madagascar, but few have the personality and, above all, the style of Chrysantho Zama. He was born in 1976 in Antanimora in the province of Tuléar (south-west Madagascar). Chrysantho taught himself to play guitar. He soon began to meet well-known local musicians, mastering their various styles. He played an important role in the traditional music networks of the Grande ile: concerts, cabarets, weddings, religious ceremonies and funerals. Since 2007, Chrysantho Zama has been the guitarist with Ny Malagasy Orkestra (The National Malagasy Band. 10 artists who carry the torch of traditional music from the red island, touring regularly around the world). At 40, he is now considered one of Madagascar's guitar masters. In particular, he embodies the tradition of Rodoringa - a lively, rhythmic musical style used in Madagascar's popular wrestling games - Zama plays and masters the various styles of Madagascar's deep south. All these styles explode in Chrysantho's playing, which is steeped in tradition yet resolutely contemporary.
