Mateus Aleluia's long career as a musician, songwriter and researcher into the pan-African musical ancestry of Brazil began in the 70s in his hometown of Cachoeira, Bahia, when he joined the influential band, Os Tincoãs, one of the first groups to bring African elements into Brazilian popular music. In 1983 they went to Angola at the invitation of the government, to work on a cultural research project. Aleluia decided to stay and eventually spent two decades there, continuing anthropological studies around the country. His return to Brazil marked the beginning of a late flowering of activity in which he has released three acclaimed albums, the latest of which, Olorum, which sees him reunited with legendary pianist João Donato and has been hailed his greatest work to date. Spiritual folk music from a deep well of experience.
