The two main language groups in South Africa and neighbouring countries are the Nguni and the Sotho. While the Nguni, the most well known groups of which are the Zulu and Xhosa, live mainly along the coast, the wide-spread Sotho groups live on the high internal plateau in South Africa, in Botswana up to the edge of the Kalahari Desert, and in mountainous Lesotho. Unique, mostly vocal music - their singing of songs of great beauty is powerful and moving, and their voices are also very present in the festive ditlhaka reedpipe ensembles and eerie lesiba mouth bow songs.
