In 2014, Elida Almeida was singing in a bar in Praia, where she was attending university and jobbing to support her young son and her family. In the audience was José da Silva, head of Lusafrica Records and producer of Cesária Évora. Two months later, she started recording her debut album, Ora doci, Ora margos (Sweet Times, Bitter Times), containing her original songs of a depth belying her 22 years, suffused with her exceptional, warm and soulful voice. The album spawned a viral YouTube hit in the song 'Nta Konsiqui', and brought her an RFI Prix Découvertes Award. Since then, her upward arc continues apace: two more acclaimed albums, collaborations with Cabo Verdean stars, Lura, Lucibela, Djodji and others, a single release with Brazilian diva Flavia Coelho and performances across Africa, Europe and the US.
