Having taken a break of two years from releasing mixes, the Big Chill returned with a vengeance in 1999 with a twenty-six track compilation that showcased just how far chill out had come in that time.
By allowing themselves the breadth of two CDs, Pete Lawrence and Tom Middleton are able to do justice to the full diversity of the Big Chill vibe, ranging as it does from memorable party tunes and funky beats to abstract electronica and ambient.
‘Enchanted 01’ also shows the Big Chill’s talent for spotting a good tune: the first CD opens with Mr Scruff’s ‘Get A Move On’, which has subsequently become one of the Enchanted Garden’s most-loved anthems, and a staple of many a subsequent compilation. 'Enchanted 01' also includes fabulously rhythmic tracks from Yam Yam, Fila Brazillia and Luke Vibert (with BJ Cole).
The second CD, meanwhile, has now classic material from Harold Budd, Instrumental, A Man Called Adam and Another Fine Day – not to mention material from Pete’s Chilled by Nature and Tom’s Amba projects. Those who attended the Big Chill’s Winter Concert at the Union Chapel last December will also be pleased to learn that the elegant ‘Mazuzu Dream’ from Piano Circus is also included here. An essential collection.
