Johny Murata is an acoustic, electric and synth guitar player and also a composer, arranger, producer and engineer. He also plays Indian sitar and participates regularly in recordings and performances in the “world music” scenario and holistic lifestyle.
These mixed skills, surrounded by a strong harmony vision and freestyle improvisations, are the foundations of his musical personality. He is the leading of LUMINA, a Guitar/Bass/Drums Instrumental Trio based in Brazil. Lumina’s sound is a mix of many genres such as Jazz, Rock, Fusion, Post Progressive with lots of improvisations, jams, feeling and freedom. Project is the title of the free experimentations done by LUMINA inside the studio and that turned to be the first band’s CD. Project is based upon the Nada Brahma concept (Vedas – India), metaphysical theory that considers the universe as a manifestation of the primordial verb “OM”. In the other hand, Project is also based on “Pure Music” by the German composer Johannes Brahms. The “free-style sound” of LUMINA, although at the first moment it sounds like “broken” or “fragmented” without any structure, it shows us an unexpected “organic” structure after many auditions. That’s why they choose “Fractals” as the main symbol of LUMINA.

Out of the conventional jazz patterns, but not too structured for fusion, Project was acclaimed by the most important Brazilian music magazines and sites such as Cover Guitarra, Cover Baixo, Batera e Percussão, Blues ’n’ Jazz, Clube de Jazz and ProgShine. Joined the project the drummer Fabio Fernandes with activity since the early 70’s. He performed with many important Brazilian musicians, such as Hermeto Pascoal and Banda do Sol, and the Bass-player Sizão Machado - well know all over the world by his performances with Chet Baker, Elis Regina, Herbie Memm, Chico Buarque, Djavan, Milton Nascimento, Jim Hall, Ivan Lins, Randy Brecker, Flora Purim, Airto Moreira, etc.
