Jiraan – Arabic for “neighbors” – is an ensemble of twelve musicians of different nationalities led by the Syrian violinist Shalan Alhamwy. This ensemble developed a subtle and wide repertoire incorporating Syrian, Iraqi and Turkish music, European folk, Baroque and new compositions inspired by old forms and a jazzy approach.
In 2017 a smaller edition saw the birth light during the Istanbul Ekspres festival in a co-production with the Handelsbeurs, with an ensemble of 5 musicians from Syria and Turkey performing Arabic and Turkish repertoire that has been somehow a shared tradition between the two nations.
