SEUN KUTI & EGYPT 80 WILL GUEST COPENHAGEN DURING WOMEX WITH A LATE SHOW
Afterparty CROSS MC CELEBRATING AFRO BEAT
28. October at 22:00 (doors open at 20)
SEUN KUTI (Womex Showcase 2007) is the youngest son of legendary afrobeat pioneer FELA KUTI and leads his father's former band Egypt 80. At the age of nine Seun expressed the wish to sing to his father. A short while later Seun started acting as a sort of mascot at the concerts of Fela, and would sing a few songs backed by Egypt 80, before his father took to the stage. Since then, Seun has followed the political and social ethos of his father.
After Fela's death in 1997, Seun, then only 14 years old, became the lead singer of Egypt 80. While still in school, Seun had to choose between a career in music and one in American Football for which he has an outstanding talent.
The Egypt 80 line-up consists of musicians that not only played with Fela Kuti, but often were arrested and harassed alongside the founder of the Afrobeat movement, Fela. Live sets consist of both new material and originals from Seun's father. During his lifetime Fela Kuti never performed songs he had recorded, so for many fans this is their first chance to enjoy classics like Shuffering and Shmiling, Colonial Mentality and Army Arrangement in a live setting. A new studio album called "From Africa with Fury: Rise" has just been released and is already topping the World Music Hit lists.
Makadem is Kenya's Benga Beat superstar. His excellent musical sense and humor, he takes the audience with an amazing stage presence. Makadem's songs speaks of the fluid nature of modern African culture and demonstrate the fusion that is at the heart of contemporary African identity. He is a specialist of Benga music, arguably the most distinctive sound to have come out of Kenya's 70 years of creating urban music. The Nairobi based rhythm group adds funky groves to the style, and guitarist John Mutombo adds his Congolese Jimmy Hendrix rock style. The CD "Ohanglaman" topped the sales in East Africa when released, and a collaboration with Danish Pharfar is now hitting in the area.
You can look forward to a fantastic evening with some of the best African music of 2011!
A FULL MAKADEM MIDNIGHT CONCERT WILL BE TAKING PLACE AT COPENHAGEN JAZZHOUSE on the 29th of OCTOBER at 01:00!
