Master of the tar and of Persian classical art music, composer, performance artist and teacher Elshan Ghasimi works at the confluence of tradition and modernity, the first female musician to reinterpret the ancient repertoire of Persian classical music, the Radif, through the inspirational prism of poetry and conceptual art. Ghasimi entered the Tehran Conservatory of Music at the age of nine, going on to further education in Baku, studying the Caucasian Tar and the mugam repertoire of classical Azerbaijani music. At 17, she became the youngest member of the Iranian National Orchestra. However, with no opportunity for a female composer to publish her music in her home country, she relocated to Berlin in 2016 where she composes for and performs with ensembles such as Concerto Köln and Ensemble ekstRaktə, while also performing as a soloist.
