Seiva was formed in 2014 by Joana Negrão and Vasco Ribeiro Casais - both previously part of the trailblazing Portuguese roots remodellers, Dazkarieh - and percussionist Rita Nóvoa, on a mission to create a musical project channeling the rural oral traditions of the Beira-Baixia region in the east of Portugal, and charging them with a modern urban energy, underlining the continued relevance of the old ways of seeing. Skillfully utilising viola braguesa, cavaquinho, Portuguese bagpipes, adufe frame drums, Negrão's commanding voice and Nóvoa's powerful drumming, Seiva explore the feminine side of the Portuguese soul, present in the work songs, the ancient rhythms, and songs of faith - with a special emphasis on women who nurture and protect against the evils of the world. Their sound is lush, exuberant, deeply rooted yet vividly in the now.
