Piranha Arts, who bring you WOMEX, today announced the official jury, also known as the 7 Samurai. Together, they will be curating the official Programme for the 26th edition of the event taking place from 21 – 25 October in Budapest, Hungary.
The WOMEX jury system was established in 1999, and our annually changing jurors - like the participants of the WOMEX programme itself - come from all over the world. Representing eight countries, these three women and four men are music veterans with varied expertise, working as music journalists, DJs, radio broadcasters, booking agents, festival directors and much more, who each brings with them their respective musical knowledge, background and forward-thinking ideas. Once all the proposals have been submitted, the 7 Samurai will determine the official showcase and conference selection.
The Showcase Samurai:
• Balázs Weyer (Hungary), director of programming, Hangvető
• Harun Izer (Turkey), director, Istanbul Jazz festival
• Jordana Leigh (USA), director, David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center
• Marco Perales (Spain), co-founder, CityZen Music
• Sarah Coxson (UK), lead booking agent and artistic adviser at Alan Bearman Music, former deputy/reviews editor at fRoots magazine
The Conference Samurai:
• Silja Fischer (Germany/France), secretary-general, International Music Council
• Daniel Nogueira (Brazil), musician and project coordinator, Brasil Música e Artes
Statements from our Jury Members:
"At a time when world politics is tearing us apart, I believe what WOMEX and other international music meetings are doing is very important. WOMEX has always been a precious and inspiring showcase for not only music but also the vibrant cultures that produce it. It became a hub for inclusivity and diversity. I am glad to be a part of this wonderful event and it’s jury.” - Harun Izer, Showcase Samurai
“As both artistic advisor for festivals and events and as a reviews editor, I have always been excited and energised about bringing great music from around the world to new ears. I am relishing the opportunity to listen to and select some new inspiring sounds for WOMEX showcases, as part of the Seven Samurai panel.” - Sarah Coxson, Showcase Samurai
