New Zealand Māori composer-performer Rob Thorne, M.A, (Ngāti Tumutumu) is a diverse explorer in the newly revived evolution of Taonga Pūoro (traditional Māori instruments), fusing these ancient voices with modern sounds, technology and techniques.
He creates ethereal immersive and powerful works that range from stage to site-specific through to contemporary chamber music and ground-breaking electronica - with expert knowledge and a deep respect of tradition.
Existing shows include captivating live versions of stunning solo album "Whāia te Māramatanga" (Rattle Records/NZ) and collaboration "Clear Stones'" (Subtext Records/Berlin) with ground-breaking electronica artist Fis and who were then invited to showcase at SXSW2018.
In July'18 Rob released the already critically acclaimed collaborative album 'Rewa' with Athens-based pianist Tania Giannouli, which is yet to be premiered as a live show.
As the New Zealand School of Music's Composer-in-Residence 2017/18, Rob created many solo and collaborative works including the NZ Festival commissioned piece 'Tomokanga' for string quartet and taonga puoro, premiered with the New Zealand String Quartet in the full length and sold out taonga puoro based festival show 'Te Ao Hou'.
