Sea of Wood was set up in 2016 with a view to providing a platform for the under-represented artists and music of Yunnan. With a scope ranging from artist management to recording, publishing and festival production, the label has been instrumental in raising the profile of Yunnan music both domestically and internationally, having released a string of well received albums, culminating in compiling The Rough Guide to the Music of Yunnan which was released in 2022 to critical acclaim.

- Manhu's Voices of the Sani album was top 15 on the March 2020 Transglobal World Music Charts, 51st on Best Of Transglobal World Music Charts season 2019-2020.
- Shanren was in the Best Of annual selections of Transglobal World Music Charts for both their 2014 and 2021 albums.
- Bagedai's recent 2024 release was awarded Top of the World in Songlines' October issue.
- Puman reached No. 1 of the Juno Dub chart, No.4 on the Juno Vinyl Reggae chart.

Currently developing artist residencies to pair international artists with Chinese artists in collaboration with Chinese DSPs, Sea of Wood Records benefit from excellent relations with Tencent and Netease.
